Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani met with Syrian interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, known as Al-Jolani, in Doha on Tuesday. The meeting, attended by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, focused on a range of pressing issues, particularly concerning security in the region.
The trilateral discussions were convened in response to rapid developments in the region, especially the ongoing situation in Syria. During the meeting, Al-Sudani called for a comprehensive political process that honors Syria’s social, religious, and national diversity. He also emphasized the importance of protecting holy sites and places of worship for all groups within the brotherly Syrian populace, alongside a strong commitment to upholding human rights, particularly in light of recent events affecting the Alawite community.
According to sources, Al-Sudani pointed out the crucial role of the new Syrian government in taking meaningful and effective steps to combat ISIS. He emphasized that tangible progress in addressing these issues could pave the way for enhanced relations and cooperation mechanisms that align with the shared interests of the two nations, ultimately contributing to greater security and stability in the region.
This meeting marks the first engagement between Al-Sudani and Al-Jolani following the latter’s discussions with several Iraqi leaders in recent months, signaling ongoing diplomatic efforts amidst a complex backdrop of regional challenges.
