President-elect Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to Joe Biden’s recent decision to commute the death sentences of several federal inmates to life imprisonment.
According to the Independent, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his condemnation of Biden’s actions. He stated that the decision has caused additional pain and shock for the victims’ families. Trump described the commutation as “unbelievable” and “irrational,” emphasizing that the families were taken aback by the announcement.
Before leaving the White House, President Joe Biden commuted the death sentences of 37 out of 40 federal prisoners. Notably, high-profile cases, including that of the Boston Marathon bomber and the individual responsible for the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, were excluded from this commutation. Additionally, more than 2,000 inmates currently on death row in various states were also not affected by Biden’s decision.
Biden’s commutation move comes less than a month prior to Trump’s inauguration. During his first term, Trump had previously overseen a number of federal executions, highlighting the stark contrast in their approaches to capital punishment.
