Eric Trump recently shared a humorous image on social media featuring his father, Donald Trump, “shopping” online for Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. The mocked-up picture depicted a shopping cart on Amazon filled with these unconventional items, accompanied by the caption: “We’re back again!”
The post comes on the heels of Donald Trump’s recent controversial comments about these regions. He has previously suggested that the United States should purchase Greenland from Denmark—a notion he initially floated during his presidency from 2017 to 2021. Trump argued on his social media platform, Truth Social, that acquiring the self-governing island would enhance “national security and freedom worldwide.”
Additionally, Trump warned that if Panama continues to impose exorbitant fees on American ships passing through the Panama Canal, Washington might consider reclaiming control of the canal. He characterized the 1999 decision by the U.S. administration to transfer full control of the canal to Panama as “foolish.”
Earlier this month, Trump also proposed that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States, a suggestion he reportedly made during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Despite the lighthearted nature of Eric Trump’s post, some aides and associates of Donald Trump believe he is genuinely contemplating the acquisition of Greenland and the reclamation of the Panama Canal. Sources told the New York Post that Trump is serious about his views, maintaining that countries that do not expand may face decline. They noted his admiration for previous U.S. administrations that pursued expansionist policies.
In response to Trump’s comments, leaders from Greenland, Denmark, and Panama have expressed strong opposition, asserting their intention not to cede or sell their territories to the United States.
