ISIS Claims Responsibility for First Attack on Julani Government

In the first sign of ISIS re-emerging as a threat in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, the terrorist group claimed responsibility for an explosion targeting the new Syrian army in Sweida province.

ISIS claimed responsibility on Thursday for its first attack on forces loyal to the new Syrian government since the fall of Bashar al-Assad.

In a statement published by SITE, which monitors terrorist groups, ISIS stated that “a roadside bomb previously planted by the soldiers of the caliphate targeted a military vehicle of the apostate Syrian regime” in Sweida province in southern Syria.

SITE described the incident as ISIS’s first attack against the new Syrian government’s forces.

The explosion, which occurred on Wednesday, killed one person and wounded three members of the 70th Division of the new Syrian army.

Although ISIS attacks in areas controlled by the new Syrian government—which took power after Bashar al-Assad’s fall in December—have been rare, the group has continued to carry out operations against Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria.

Syrian authorities announced this week that they had arrested members of an ISIS-affiliated cell near Damascus.
