China’s Response to Macron’s Claim About Taiwan

The Chinese Embassy in Singapore responded to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements and his comparison of the Ukrainian war with the situation in Taiwan.

According to Russia Today, the Chinese Embassy in Singapore emphasized that “the comparison between Taiwan and the Ukrainian war is unacceptable” in response to Macron’s remarks.

During his speech at the “Shangri-La Dialogue Forum” in Singapore, Macron dismissed the notion that the Ukrainian war is solely a European concern, stating: “If we consider that Russia can occupy part of Ukraine’s territory without restrictions, what might happen in Taiwan?”

The Chinese Embassy in Singapore reiterated that the Taiwan issue is “completely Beijing’s internal affair” and emphasized: “Comparing the Taiwan issue with the Ukrainian issue is unacceptable. The two issues are of a different nature and are not comparable.”

The Crimean Peninsula was annexed by Russia shortly after a US-backed coup in Kyiv in 2014, and four other regions in eastern Ukraine joined Russia through referendums following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Moscow has insisted that for a peace deal to be achieved, Ukraine must recognize Russia’s new borders and withdraw its forces.

Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949, when nationalists retreated to the island after losing the civil war to the communists on mainland China. Beijing considers Taiwan part of Chinese territory and has warned Taipei against declaring independence.
