UK Seeks to Buy American Fighters Capable of Using Tactical Nuclear Weapons

The British newspaper The Times reported that the United Kingdom is aiming to acquire American-made fighter jets capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons.

According to the report, this purchase represents the largest expansion of Britain’s defense capabilities since the Cold War.

Citing the RIA Novosti news agency, it was noted that British Defense Secretary John Haley and Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Tony Radakin are planning to acquire American fighters capable of dropping unguided bombs that are less powerful than conventional nuclear bombs.

The newspaper also mentioned that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer supports the program, and that London has engaged in discussions with the Pentagon regarding the procurement.

Informed sources indicated that Britain is considering purchasing Lockheed Martin’s F-35A stealth fighters, although other variants of the aircraft are also under review.

Previously, the British Defense Minister stated that the country intends to spend three percent of its GDP on defense by 2034.
