Qatar took part in the 9th United Nations Conference on Competition and Consumer Protection, held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, reaffirming its commitment to fair competition and the protection of consumer rights in a rapidly evolving global economy.
The Qatari delegation was led by Hassan bin Sultan Al-Ghanem, Assistant Undersecretary for Consumer Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The international gathering brought together representatives from around the world to discuss pressing issues at the intersection of competition, consumer protection, and emerging global trends.
This year’s agenda focused on timely topics such as the role of artificial intelligence in consumer protection, sustainability in the circular economy, and how competition plays out in global food supply chains. Participants also took stock of two decades of voluntary peer reviews on national competition policies, and examined how to better align competition laws with consumer protection efforts.
The conference highlighted challenges and strategies related to cross-border monopolies, product safety standards, and the growing influence of e-commerce on consumer rights. It served as a key platform for dialogue and cooperation between countries seeking to build more resilient, fair, and consumer-friendly markets.
Qatar’s involvement underlines its ongoing effort to remain engaged in shaping international economic standards and policies. By taking part in these global discussions, Qatar continues to support frameworks that promote healthy competition, safeguard consumer interests, and foster a more inclusive and dynamic global marketplace.
