Kim Jong Un Announces “Second Revolution in Armored Forces”

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has declared the beginning of a “second revolution in armored forces” during his inspection of a key tank manufacturing facility, state media reported Sunday.

Kim praised what he described as “major progress in the core technology of Korean-style light tanks” and emphasized that the production of advanced tanks and armored vehicles is critical to modernizing the military and achieving the ruling party’s strategic goals.

The visit comes as part of North Korea’s broader efforts to upgrade its conventional armed forces alongside its nuclear and missile programs. Recently, Kim has overseen the launch of a new naval destroyer and conducted tests of advanced drones and other weapon systems.

South Korean and U.S. officials have alleged that North Korea is receiving technical and military assistance from Russia in exchange for supplying munitions, missiles, and personnel for the war in Ukraine—though no concrete evidence has been publicly confirmed.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim stressed the necessity of replacing outdated armored vehicles with newer models, calling it a top priority for the modernization of ground forces. He expressed satisfaction with upgrades to tank design and firing systems and urged factory officials to “relentlessly” improve technology, boost production rates, and enhance working conditions.

KCNA reported: “Comrade Kim Jong Un inspected the operations of the main tank factory… He toured various production sections and closely examined the manufacturing process, renovation efforts, and the progress of R&D missions for core tank models.”

This latest move signals Pyongyang’s continued focus on military expansion amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Analysts suggest the push for armored force modernization could indicate preparations for potential future conflicts or a display of strength ahead of diplomatic engagements.
